The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
