Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
